Sweetgrass Helium Plant Enters Major Build Phase as US Secures Domestic Supply for Semiconductor Fabs

As the United States pushes to secure its domestic semiconductor manufacturing supply chain, Avanti Helium Corp. has entered a pivotal development phase at its Sweetgrass Helium Project in Montana. The facility advances toward assembly and commissioning just days after the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officially added helium to its Critical Materials List, recognizing the gas as vital for national security and microchip fabrication.

Modern semiconductor fabrication facilities (fabs) rely heavily on ultra-pure helium at nearly every stage of chipmaking. Due to its inert chemical properties and extreme thermal conductivity, helium is indispensable for cooling silicon wafers during plasma etching, preventing unwanted chemical reactions, and maintaining leak-tight cleanroom environments. Unlike other industrial gases, helium has no practical substitute in advanced semiconductor fabrication. With global supply chains historically vulnerable to geopolitical volatility, domestic chipmakers are actively seeking secure, regional sources.

Avanti’s Sweetgrass project directly addresses this fab-level vulnerability. The company reported that civil construction and site preparation at the Montana location are substantially complete, with the main processing building slated for completion in early November 2026. Gathering pipelines connecting the WNG 11-22 and WNG 10-21 production wells to the facility are fully installed, establishing the infrastructure needed to transport raw helium-bearing gas.

The project is now transitioning to the mobilization and physical integration of its Helium Recovery Unit (HRU). Plant designer Quantum Technology is coordinating with Avanti to ship key processing components, including an inlet separator scheduled for delivery in early November. Once on-site, teams will execute the mechanical assembly, piping, and electrical integration ahead of final commissioning.

“Helium is not simply another industrial gas. It is a strategically important resource that is essential to some of the world’s most advanced technologies,” said Chris Bakker, CEO of Avanti Helium. “Sweetgrass is moving closer to becoming a new source of American-produced helium, and we believe the progress being made today is particularly meaningful given the growing strategic importance of securing reliable domestic helium supplies.”

The DOE’s critical material designation also opens potential federal financing pathways to expand domestic output. By establishing operational recovery infrastructure in Montana, Avanti positions itself as a dependable local supplier for North America’s rapidly expanding semiconductor manufacturing base.
