The SonoFlex Acoustic System from Nordson Test & Inspection has been named the recipient of the Best of West award at SEMICON West 2026. Jointly presented by SEMI Americas and Semiconductor Digest, the annual industry accolade recognizes newly commercialized manufacturing products and services that deliver measurable advancements across electronics production and supply chain capabilities.
Acoustic micro-imaging has become an essential quality-control discipline as microelectronic architectures transition toward high-density heterogeneous integration and small panel-based form factors. In multi-layer packages, structural defects such as microscopic delaminations, interfacial cracks, and internal package voids cannot be identified through surface-level optical tools. However, conventional scanning acoustic microscopy has historically operated as an offline analytical technique with limited throughput, creating an operational bottleneck on high-volume production lines. The SonoFlex platform directly resolves these speed constraints, utilizing proprietary transducer and pulser technology to scan substrates twice as fast as legacy acoustic inspection tools while maintaining high defect sensitivity over a broad production frequency range.
The equipment architecture integrates specialized software algorithms with scalable hardware design to address cleanroom yield requirements. SonoFlex runs on newly developed FlexCore software paired with Nordson Intelligence AI Multi Gate Image Analysis (MGIA), which isolates true voids from background noise and classifies buried structural anomalies. To support flexible manufacturing capacity, the hardware features a modular layout that enables semiconductor packaging fabs to link up to four tools side by side. This clustered configuration can increase throughput and units per hour by up to eight times, allowing operators to scale non-destructive metrology alongside escalating fab output without requiring extensive cleanroom reconfigurations.
The recognition reflects a broader manufacturing transition toward panel-level packaging and larger substrate form factors. As artificial intelligence accelerators, high-power compute modules, and automotive electronics demand tighter bump pitches and thinner multi-die stacks, undetected voids in underfills and mold compounds cause severe thermal bottlenecks and field failures. Non-destructive acoustic tools that deliver production-line scanning velocities enable outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) providers and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) to shift from sample-based quality audits to near-inline defect screening.
By coupling acoustic transducers with multi-gate artificial intelligence analysis and modular clustering, Nordson has advanced acoustic inspection into an inline-compatible process control technology. As global semiconductor manufacturing expands into high-density substrate packaging, deploying fast, high-sensitivity defect inspection platforms will remain essential to sustaining commercial yields across next-generation chip architectures.
