Axcelis Starts Building $35M Ion Implantation Facility in South Korea

Axcelis Technologies, Inc. has officially broken ground on a new $35 million ion implantation equipment manufacturing facility in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The investment expands the company’s high-volume manufacturing infrastructure in East Asia, scaling production capacity for front-end capital equipment to serve leading-edge logic, memory, and power semiconductor manufacturers worldwide.

The Pyeongtaek project represents an expansion of the company’s regional manufacturing operations at the Axcelis Asia Operations Center. Encompassing roughly 200,000 square feet of total gross floor area, the facility integrates cleanrooms, warehousing, and a specialized technical training center within a lean production layout. The manufacturing lines leverage operational principles drawn from the company’s nearly 50 years of semiconductor capital equipment engineering. Construction is underway, with commercial tool manufacturing scheduled to commence in the second half of 2028.

Ion implantation serves as an indispensable front-end wafer fabrication process, introducing energetic dopant ions into crystal silicon and wide-bandgap substrates to precisely modify electrical characteristics. As commercial foundries and integrated device manufacturers ramp sub-2nm gate-all-around architectures, advanced high-bandwidth memory (HBM),and high-voltage power devices, precise dopant depth profiles and atomic-scale lattice damage control have become critical yield drivers. Securing high-volume tool manufacturing capacity close to Asia’s primary wafer fabrication corridors allows equipment makers to shorten lead times and accelerate customer-specific tool configurations.

Russell Low, President and CEO of Axcelis Technologies, noted that the expansion marks a pivotal milestone for the company’s operational growth in South Korea, adding that advanced semiconductor manufacturing tools will underpin technological progress across artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Choo Mi Ae, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized that the project reinforces the position of Gyeonggi Province and Pyeongtaek City as primary global semiconductor hubs, generating high-value technical jobs and strengthening the regional supply chain.

For the international microelectronics industry, expanding front-end toolmaking outside North America provides essential supply-chain redundancy. Pyeongtaek anchors some of the world’s largest commercial memory and logic fabrication complexes, making local tool assembly, parts staging, and qualification testing central to minimizing fab commissioning delays. As semiconductor fabricators accelerate capital expenditure cycles across East Asia and emerging fabrication hubs like India, establishing agile, localized equipment manufacturing ensures reliable tool supply lines for advanced device manufacturing.
