Wolfspeed Fixes Chip Flaws with Clean 200mm Wafers

Building high-power chips for electric cars and power grids is getting harder. As these chips grow bigger and carry more power, even tiny flaws inside the raw base material can ruin an entire production batch.

Wolfspeed wants to stop that waste before it begins. The company released a new base wafer called the Premium 200mm n-type silicon carbide (SiC) substrate. Instead of asking chip factories to upgrade expensive tools, this clean starting disk works directly with existing customer equipment.

Silicon carbide wafers often suffer from tiny hollow crystal cracks known as micropipes. Wolfspeed’s new wafer cuts these defects down to fewer than three across an entire eight-inch disc, verified using standard X-ray scans. The discs also stay flatter and show fewer internal crystal twists.

Because the wafer is flatter and cleaner, chip factories produce more working chips from every single run. That cuts down testing delays and saves manufacturers money.

“We’re giving customers a stronger foundation for developing increasingly demanding silicon carbide devices, backed by the manufacturing experience and scale to support them as needs grow,” said Dr. Cengiz Balkas, executive vice president of Wolfspeed’s Materials business unit.

Wolfspeed has run its 200mm production lines continuously since 2022. The company used those four years to fine-tune its crystal recipe and remove weak spots.

The new premium wafers are ready for purchase today. Wolfspeed set aside dedicated factory lines to make them and plans to increase output as global orders rise.
